The number one topic on the doorstep is the very poor state of our local roads. So many people have suffered burst tyres, other car damage or have come off their bike as a result of a pothole.

Cambridgeshire County Council is responsible for the highways here. And the statistics show it is not doing a good job.

A survey by go.compare found that Cambridgeshire has the highest number of potholes reported in England and Wales: a shocking 22.3 potholes per mile of road.

Now the Department of Transport has published tables of how well or badly each local authority is doing in tackling the pothole crisis.

Cambridgeshire is shown as having an Amber rating – and it narrowly avoided being flagged as red, the worst rating..

Our roads have deteriorated after a decade of neglect by the previous Conservative Government. But we can’t keep pointing the finger at them.

The Labour Government is determined to see smoother and safer journeys across the country and the Chancellor recently announced a record £7.3billion to help put things right.

Here in Cambridgeshire the Lib Dem controlled county council say they are spending millions on fixing the roads. What residents say is that repairs don’t last long, the same pot holes re-open time and again.

We need our money to be spent more wisely. We demand that the County Council get a grip of the contractors who are supposedly mending our roads.

If you want to see the Lib Dem County Council make our roads fit for purpose, then please sign our petition.  It’s on the County Council site so it will be seen by the key decision makers.
