South Cambridgeshire constituency undergoes boundary changes

Following a review by the Boundary Commission, the boundaries of most of the Cambridgeshire constituencies including South Cambridgeshire have changed quite significantly. The new boundaries are as shown in the map, with many of the villages and towns in the south and west of the old constituency such as Cambourne and Northstowe moving into the new constituency of St Neots and Mid Cambs. We wish our former members well in this new constituency.

As well as losing 30-40% of voters who are moving to new constituencies, we are also gaining important new wards. Cherry Hinton, formerly a Cambridge City ward in general elections becomes a part of South Cambridgeshire, as does Fen Ditton and Fulbourn, formerly in South East Cambridgeshire. These boundary changes make a very significant difference to South Cambridgeshire.

The loss of the south and west villages and towns from the former constituency, the addition of Cherry Hinton and Fulbourn and Labour’s continued strong showing in the polling gives Labour a very real chance of winning this seat when the general election is finally called. Polling experts Electoral Calculus have assessed the current polling chances in our seat based on national and local polling. They have concluded that it is a three-way marginal, with less than 3,000 votes between the three major parties.

Labour has shown recently with Alistair Strathern in Mid Beds and Sarah Edwards in Tamworth that there are no no-go areas for Labour, these great young candidates overthrowing huge Tory majorities in two rural seats. Voters are tired of being let down by the Tories and want change. Labour represents that change and hope. Labour is the only party that can be in government after the next election in place of the Tories, who have brought misery and despair to most of the country for over 13 years.

We look forward to getting out on the doorstep over the months ahead to talk to the voters of South Cambridgeshire to discuss their concerns. Change is on the way. That change is Labour.
