First, thank you to everyone who voted for Labour’s Dan Greef and Anand Pillai for the Council by-election in Longstanton ward. We came from a distant third in May to within 155 votes of winning.

It was a tense as the votes were counted. The usual Conservative and Lib Dem piles were growing but this time there was a new rival, with Labour in close contention.  Dan Greef came close to making a breakthrough.

Dan says:

‘Congratulations to the new councillors. I’ll be pushing them to act on the issues that matter here.

‘Your Labour team listens, learns and acts. And that’s what we’ll keep on doing. I live in Northstowe, this area is my home, and we deserve better. I’m going to keep fighting for my community.

‘From listening to you, we know that you are fed up with the lack of community space and are rightly concerned about the groundwater situation under our feet.

‘The Liberal Democrat Council must get a grip and stop making mistakes, they have been in power for almost five years and now they must start delivering.

‘The Liberal Democrat vote was halved. This is no surprise given strong rumours of splits and arguments. This doesn’t leave enough time to listen to residents, turn up to meetings or to deliver for the community.

The Conservatives did well gaining more votes than last time. As their local MP acknowledges this was because of local issues. Their campaign against the proposed Cambridge congestion charge is how they attracted support.

‘We know that you, the voters are the boss. If we don’t win, it’s because we’ve not convinced enough people to back us.

‘In a short period Labour vastly increased our votes in Longstanton. Think what we can do with more time and more campaigning. Join us and be part of our campaign team.’
