February’s meeting in Foxton Village Hall was well-attended by 24 people (and 1 four-legged companion), and included the addition of cake from BAME officer and CLP treasurer Anand Pillai.
A motion on Brexit was passed, with those present voting to express support for the course of action suggested by Daniel Zeichner (MP for Cambridge) which would consider revoking Article 50 as option to resolve the current Brexit crisis. This was not a unanimous vote, and there was impassioned and well-informed discussion from all sides.
After this, Elena Moses, a member of the environmental activism group Extinction Rebellion, gave a thought-provoking and informative talk on eco-socialism, followed by an in-depth discussion with members which raised a variety of issues from what constitutes a ‘green job’ to how we can try to resolve some of the issues facing our climate through personal actions.
Additional business included mentioning the efforts of BAME officer Anand Pillai in starting the process of establishing an Ethnic Minority Forum in South Cambs, and the process to find a new secretary as after some fantastic work Darren Macey is stepping down.
The after-meeting pub was filled with interesting discussion including the possibility of inviting Heidi Allen to a future CLP meeting to discuss Brexit. With her recent actions, maybe this is not as mad as it sounded then? We can no doubt discuss it in depth in Sawston!
