Richard Howitt rallies local members to EU campaign

IMGA0514.JPGLabour’s East of England MEP Richard Howitt gave a rousing speech in support of EU membership at a joint meeting of South Cambs and South East Cambs labour.

At the packed meeting in Waterbeach he set out his primary reasons for staying in the EU – jobs, workers rights, human rights and the environment.

“Remember that the EU was formed after 22 million people died in the war, so that our people would not have to die again,” he said.

“I believe passionately that staying in the EU is the right thing to do and the party at every level, from Jeremy down, will be campaigning to stay in. It’s the most important political decision of our lifetimes.

“We don’t fear people from other countries, we embrace them but we are also patriotic about Britain. We are a trading nation, we started the industrial revolution and we set the trading rules – the idea that we retreat  from that is absurd.”

He rejected eurosceptic arguments about the power and budget of the EU saying that Cambridgeshire County and Peterborough City councils employed more people than the EU and that the UK had a great deal of influence over European decision making.

He also ridiculed the Tory leadership’s efforts to appease their own rebels by badgering European leaders to consider relatively minor amendments to the UK’s membership when they have the much bigger challenges of terrorism and the refugee crisis to deal with.
