Alex Wood Hall in Cambridge was the location for the most recent South Cambs CLP meeting (March 1st) during which we had two guest speakers, Cambridgeshire PCC candidate Dave Baigent and city council leader Herbert Lewis.
The meeting was not only a great opportunity to hear about the topics Dave and Herbert wanted to speak about, but was a chance to discuss some of the issues facing South Cambs, and indeed Cambridgeshire as a whole. The EU referendum, upcoming May elections and a lively discourse on everything from Cambridgeshire housing developments to the Cambridge City Deal got a mention.
Dave Baigent explained about his approach to how he would handle the Police and Crime Commissioner role with an emphasis on community relations and a readiness to travel to wherever he was needed. No comfy chair in a big office for him – Dave is eager to get out on the road to work with communities across the county to help make their local areas safer, more pleasant places to live in! He has thirty years of service in the fire brigade, and developed and taught ARU’s undergraduate policing course. His conviction, experience and passion for the role really shone through on Tuesday, which is why he is the best choice for Cambridgeshire PCC.
Lewis talked about the upcoming elections in May and issues affecting South Cambridgeshire. These included the high cost of housing, problems with transport, the inadequacy of the living wage for the region and the cuts to healthcare which target care services for vulnerable adults and the disabled. With issues like this facing the county, it’s important that we put up a strong showing for the 5th May elections.
On that note, if anybody would like to lend a hand and support the South Cambs CLP with canvassing, manning a stall or similar please do make sure to contact us. This could be for supporting the EU referendum campaign, Dave Baigent’s PCC bid or the district council elections. All volunteers will be greatly appreciated, no matter how much or how little time you can contribute!
The next South Cambs CLP meeting will be 5th April in the village hall at Haslingfield at 19:30.
