Cambridgeshire deserves a full time mayor

A letter from South Cambs CLP chair John Beresford to the Cambridge News responding to Tory MP Heidi Allen's announcement she hopes to stand for mayor of Cambridgeshire. See article here.

Dear sir,

So, our South Cambridgeshire MP, with the apparent backing of the Prime Minister, thinks she can be a part-time Mayor of Greater Cambridge and Peterborough.

That is, overseeing road, transport, housing and higher education policy in the area, along with ongoing consultation with the seven different councils involved.

How much of the £70,000-odd salary and the near-£2,000,000 set-up costs for a part-time mayoral office is Ms. Allen prepared to defer?

If having a Mayor is the cost of all the financial benefits that the area is to receive, let’s at least have a full-time one.

John Beresford
